Summer Camp

This summer the girls have had a blast at Camp Legacy.  It's a day camp and each week they have a new theme.  They do crafts, sing songs, bake items, and play games based on the theme.  So their weeks are always different.  They also get to spend a lot of time outside.  Tuesday and Thursday afternoons are spent in the sprinklers or kid pools.  The girls have loved it and we have loved that they are happy and tired when we pick them up :)

A Heart-filled Weekend In Chicago

It’s a week before we leave for vacation but we couldn’t resist a chance to see some friends who have become more like family since we met 2 years ago in Wuhan, China where we were both going to meet our daughters.  They sent us a link for the Illinois area picnic with only the following statement, “you in?”.  We quickly looked and at our schedules and said, “Yes!  Let’s do this!!”  Then we found out Cubs were in town for the weekend too…so seriously a no-brainer J

This was our first trip to Chicago with the girls.  Due to flight costs we decided we were going to make this a road trip.  We left Thursday afternoon and pulled in late to our hotel.  It was fun to watch the girls point out all the lights and tall, tall buildings.  It’s so much fun watching the girls experience new things.

Friday, we slept in a little and then headed to Wrigleyville for the game.  Matt is a huge Cubs fan and has been since high school; therefore, we are all Cubs fans.  But Ava in particular is a big fan as well.  It turned out to be such a great day (minus the fact that the Cubs lost the game)!  We did some shopping in Wrigleyville for shirts, hats, and Cubs stuffed toys.  Then headed to the Cubbie Bear for appetizers and drinks and then to the game!  Our seats were behind 3rd base, in the shade…perfect!  The girls did awesome; coloring and playing their LeapPads through the game.  We left once to get ice cream and ran into Cubbie Bear.  So well worth the trip.  Otherwise the girls sang proudly the 7th Inning Stretch and really did a great job so that we could all enjoy the game.  We finished the day with dinner at the original Magianno’s Italian Restaurant.  Yummy!!

On Saturday, we spent the morning exploring the city and doing a little shopping on the Magnificent Mile.  The girls loved seeing the river, the big boats, and all the sculptures everywhere. Around noon we headed to Union Station to get on our train to Roselle for the Holt Picnic.  We met our friends there and were surprised to see another family we traveled with to China as well!  It was so great to see everyone, catch up, and see those beautiful babies again (even though they are no longer babies).  It’s crazy!!  There’s such an immediate bond that is formed on this journey of adoption with other families going on the same journey and my heart just explodes seeing them all again!!  Especially seeing the kids doing so well, even though we all know that the journey is not always easy…there’s just a relief that you can be real and you don’t have to hide some of the struggles or more difficult times.  These are my people who I can easily discuss the hard times and celebrate the good times…they get it!!  It was so fun to catch up and to meet other Holt families; several who are just starting the journey.

After the picnic, we rode the train back to the city and met up with our Chicago, Holt friends again for some delicious Chicago deep dish pizza.  Yummy!!  We then walked around Millennium Park and visited some more.  There’s never enough time and we eventually had to say see ya later and head back to the hotel.  The girls crashed after a long, beautiful day!

Sunday, we headed for home but made a quick detour to see The Field of Dreams film sight.  This is one of Matt’s favorite movies and it was fun to see him smile from ear to ear at being there.

My heart is so full with joy as we head home after this beautiful trip away with my loves!!

Ava's 6th Birthday Celebrations

Happy 6th Birthday Ava!!  How in the world are you 6 years old?!!!  We celebrated you at 3 different parties over the last month!  You are loved!!

We started your celebrations at Waconda Lake when we were there with your aunts, uncles, cousins, Nai Nai, and Grandpa.  Not only did you have a great weekend with your family but your first celebration included Strawberry Cake, new clothes, and your very own boat!!

Your next birthday celebration happened on your birthday…at Table Rock Lake with the other side of the family.  I was so excited to spend your birthday at the lake.  Growing up, I was able to celebrate several birthdays there and I loved it!  I know you love the lake as much as your mama…swimming, knee boarding, cake, and family.  Sounds like a great day to me!!

Making homemade ice cream with Pappy!

Thank you for the Princess BDay cake Lau Lau!

Lastly, we celebrated with some of your friends at an indoor bounce house facility.  We weren’t going to do a friends birthday this year but all you wanted was to be with your friends and who can say no to that?!!  You had a blast and we love watching you love on your friends.

We love you Ava Girl!  We are so proud of the young lady you are becoming!  You are sweet and kind and beautiful inside and out!

Table Rock Lake 2017

One of my all time favorite places in the world!  We were able to get to the lake house for a few days in early July and all of my family was able to join us for at least the weekend.  The forecast called for rain the entire time but we were so lucky and it didn’t actually rain until we were leaving!  Love that!!

Both girls have gained so much confidence over the last year.  Last year Ella would get into the water but needed to be right next to someone, touching them…or clinging to them at all times.  Not this year!  She still wanted help into the water off the boat but once in she was in the water she was ready to go all on her own.  She was swimming all over the place and definitely didn’t want anyone’s help.   We’ve been working all summer on getting Ella more comfortable to put her face in the water and eventually to put her head under water on her own.  We made big steps this week at the lake and by the end Ella would regularly put her face in the water all on her own.  Last year Ella would ride the tube but would not allow any major bumps; it had to be a smooth easy ride.  This year, she was out there with the rest of us…outside the wake and big bounces!!

Ava is simply a fish!  She’d be in the water 24/7 if possible.  Ava was a dare devil last year already; jumping off the dock, knee boarding, and loving wild rides on the knee board.  I think the biggest changes were Ava were seen in her swimming and knee boarding.  I could tell that swim lessons are definitely paying off!  Even with a life jacket Ava did a great job of swimming to where she wanted to go and when her mind was set on a destination she swam fast!!  I love watching this girl knee board!  She has a huge smile plastered on her face and you literally have to stop the boat to get her to stop.  This year, Ava didn’t need as much support to get on the board and get going.  Once she was up she handled some big waves like a pro!  Next year I bet she’ll be zipping in and out of the wake!

A huge benefit to meeting up at the lake house is spending quality time with my loved ones and all the new memories.  I love that we have a place that a vacation for all of us.  We can simply come and relax and just be together.
